Lithium-ion batteries are the power supply of choice for portable electronic devices, because these batteries store more energy per volume than any other portable rechargeable battery available. Recent progress, in the field of nanomaterials, provides unique and exciting opportunities to enhance the performance of LIB, while the development of larger and larger electrochemical cells necessitates the assurance of thermal stability within these cells. This proposal is for an inert atmosphere glove box for the analysis of the electrochemical performance of nanomaterials and the preparation of samples for thermal stability testing. Inert atmosphere glove boxes are common to many research groups, but we have special characteristics that make ours unique. The first special characteristic is that it will be equipped with a Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welder to seal the thermal stability testing cells. Secondly, it will be equipped with various electrode feedthroughs that will permit the electrochemical testing of the nanomaterials synthesized within my Discovery Grant program. The box will also be equipped with a vacuum oven that will permit the entrance and removal of moisture sensitive materials safely and accurately such that reliable tests can be performed. Finally, the box will be filled with an argon atmosphere due to the reactivity of Li with nitrogen. The testing methods that will be enabled by the proposed glove box will lead to great advances in the understanding surrounding lithium-ion batteries. New materials discovery will lead to benefits for all Canadians, such as an efficient and safe electric vehicle.
