My research program involves the study of regeneration of cells of the central nervous system, as well as cellular mechanisms underlying learning and memory. The animal model I use in these studies is the mollusc, Lymnaea stagnalis, as its brain cells are large, easily accessible and many are individually identified with known transmitters (e.g. dopamine). Many signaling pathways and neuronal mechanisms are conserved between vertebrates and invertebrates, so research findings from this model may directly influence our knowledge of higher nervous systems. The research I am conducting includes recordings from brain cells in a cultured environment, as well as from intact animals and isolated nervous systems. I currently have three recording set-ups in my laboratory, but only one of these is configured for recordings from cultured cells. My research program has been steadily progressing in the area of cultured neurons, and I now need to convert one of my recording set-ups for use with cultured cells.
