My NSERC funded research involves understanding how plant hormones regulate physiological and biochemical processes involved in the coordination of plant growth and development. In order to study hormonal interactions and develop working hypotheses on how plant hormones (specifically auxins, gibberellins, and abscisic acid) interact to coordinate plant growth processes between various plant tissues, and to respond to changing environmental conditions, definitive identification and quantitation of endogenous hormones, as well as hormone precursors and catabolic products are absolutely necessary. Mass spectrometry is the only technique that provides absolute compound identification and reproducible quantitative analysis needed to undertake this research effectively. The combination of gas chromatography coupled with a mass spectrometer (GC-MS) is ideal for quantitative analysis of plant hormones, and their precursors and catabolites studied in my NSERC research program and those of interest in the programs of the co-applicants, Drs. Weselake and Strelkov.
