Understanding strong light-matter interactions is a central objective in quantum optics because it provides a window into the physics of quantum condensates, particularly macroscopic electronic coherence. We will develop high-quality-factor optical microcavities based on organic semiconductors in order to explore the dynamics of exciton polaritons, which are the fundamental excitations in these devices. These can be understood as a superposition of cavity photons and excitons. Because polaritons are composite bosons, and due to the high oscillator strength of absorption in these materials, these may undergo Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) at elevated temperatures (maybe even room temperature). We will unravel polariton dynamics using linear and non-linear spectroscopies, principally two-dimensional photon echo techniques. Our objective will be to understand electronic dephasing mechanisms of polaritons in order to obtain BEC at high temperatures.
