The cell consists of intricate networks of biochemical interactions that are responsible for a wide array of cellular behaviors including cell growth, death, and movement. For this reason, a better understanding of these networks will enable bioengineers to modify cells to perform functions that address important problems such as energy production and waste disposal; biomedical researchers to repair cells involved in devastating diseases such as cancer; and researchers in other areas to gain insights into how to design complex systems with desirable properties exhibited by these networks: stability, robustness, and adaptivity.
