Destructive contact lens cases for patient compliance

Lack of patient compliance in the use of contact lenses can have devastating effects as highlighted recently. Patients topping up cleaning solutions rather than discarding used solutions have recently been implicated in serious recent bacterial and fungal outbreaks which, in some cases, resulted in the loss of sight. This proposal teams up EyeCorp, a Canadian ophthalmic company with Heather Sheardown, a biomaterials engineer. EyeCorp's founder Josh Josephson holds a patent pending on a disposable, self-destructive contact lens case with a shrinkable/degradable plug which will be developed by Sheardown. By marketing this case with an appropriate volume of solution, typically a 3 week supply, and by forcing patients through a compliance routine to empty and refill their case with solution daily (assuming daily wear), it is hoped that fewer patients will jeopardize their ocular health by topping up and reusing their solutions.
