During virus infections, the immune system utilizes various defense elements that interact together to clear the infection. A central aspect in understanding host immunity to virus infections focuses on the interaction of the virus with host immune cells such as the macrophages and dendritic cells. These cells are known as professional antigen-presenting cells (pAPCs) because they present molecules from the virus on their cell surface and initiate the activation of cytotoxic killer cells.
