Facilitating pointing in graphical interfaces via kinematic analysis of user trajectories

In modern computing systems, pointing devices - a pen, a mouse, a trackpoint, a touchpad - are ubiquitous. These devices allow users to invoke commands within the Graphical User Interfaces by interacting with various widgets, i.e., by pressing a button, accessing a menu item, etc. In programs such as Windows Journal, the GIMP, Photoshop and AutoCAD, the pointing device also serves as the primary vehicle for information entry. Given the ubiquity of pointing devices in GUIs, if we understand how people manipulate pointing devices we can leverage this understanding to develop interfaces that are both more efficient (faster to use) and reliable (prevent errors). The goal of the research supported by this grant is to more fully understand the motion of pointing devices in GUIs. We plan to develop an understanding of the different types of motion in graphical user interfaces, to specify mathematical models of these different types of user motion, to use these models to recognize the intention behind any action with a pointing device, and, finally, to use our understanding of intention to design new intelligent interaction techniques.
