Mining operations requiring hard rock blasthole drilling and deep-hole petroleum exploration often rely on the use of tri-cone rotary drill bits to accomplish their excavations efficiently and economically. Depending on the severity of in-situ rock conditions, the usual behaviour of tricone bit performance tends to see a rise to a plateau of stable performance until a critical point is reached where the penetration rate - for constant levels of applied pull-down pressure and rotation speed - will gradually begin to decline. Associated with a reduction in penetration rate are increased vibration(s) and torque reflecting a combination of bit structural failures and greater resistance to rotation in the hole.
