Known as an international leader, Canada has a long history of collaborative efforts between researchers from universities, industries and agencies. In spite of embryonic production is feasible for several decades; the yield is still not optimal especially when oocytes are from small follicular diameters. Even if several months are required for the growth of the ovarian follicles, the crucial events for developmental competence acquisition are occurring around the final maturation of the follicles, a step happening before ovulation. One of the proposed strategies to improve this competence is to influence the oocyte with the late follicular signalling while the oocyte is maintained in meiotic arrest as it occurs naturally in the follicular environment. We have recently developed the so-called "Stop-Egg-Go" as a physiological treatment to efficiently maintain bovine oocytes in meiotic arrest. This approach is of high commercial relevance since it provides a critical window to improve developmental competence of oocytes. In addition, it will allow the transport of oocytes to the laboratory, a key alternative for the expansion of reproductive technologies in dairy cow market.
