I request funds for a High Throughput Liquid Chromatography apparatus or HPLC to purify and characterize small molecules from natural sources. This apparatus will be applied to research in my laboratory that deals with the discovery and understanding of "natural products", molecules like penicillin that are produced by environmental microorganisms and which have been successfully developed for many vital purposes. These include the antibiotics used in human and veterinary medicine, anti-cancer drugs, pesticides, herbicides and many other molecules.
