The HPLC-DAD-MS system is an analytical instrument that can isolate molecules from a complex mixture and subsequently identify unique spectroscopic features for each molecule. Such data is tremendously useful for the analysis of the products of chemical reactions and the contents of bioactive extracts derived from natural sources. This fully automated instrument can also process dozens of samples each day. For these reasons HPLC-DAD-MS systems are widely used in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. To better prepare our graduate students for the workplace, the HPLC-DAD-MS system described in this proposal will be used by 56 students from five research groups to obtain extensive hands-on training and experience, as well as accelerate their research in a number of programs. This includes the biosynthesis of drug-like molecules by soil bacteria, enzyme catalysis, repair of damaged DNA with artificial receptors, extraction of oils using green solvent systems, the development of miniature analytical devices, and the development of a novel reaction for the synthesis of complex molecules.
