The objective of this project is to develop hollow fiber submerged anaerobic membrane bioreactors (HFSAnMBRs) technology for wastewater purification and demonstrate that HFSAnMBR technology is capable of achieving energy recovery and system closure for industrial wastewater treatment. This study will address the critical need of novel HFSAnMBR technology for industrial wastewater treatment using know-how developed in Canada. A series of well planned and carefully designed laboratory-scale HFSAnMBRs experiments will be conducted at Lakehead University to study the feasibility of HFSAnMBR technology for industrial wastewater treatment and optimize the performance of HFSAnMBRs in terms of bioreactor design, operating conditions, and environmental conditions. Moreover, a series of novel techniques, including the ones developed at Lakehead University, will be applied to charaecterize membrane fouling phenomena. Furthermore, strategies, including hydrodynamic conditions, operating factors, and microbiological factors, will be developed to minimize membrane fouling in HFSAnMBR systems. Determining the potential of HFSAnMBR systems for industrial wastewater treatment for energy recovery and system closure is of significant value to the industrial partner, GE Water and Process Technologies Inc. The results from this study will contribute to the development of next generation technology for industrial wastewater treatment and generate long-term benefits to Canada in terms of environment protection and health.
