英文摘要
War and emigration threw up a mountain of writing by semi-literate peasants for whom the act of writing had previously been a very laborious and occasional chore. They wrote letters home, diaries, memoirs, songbooks and home-made encyclopaedias, which all give a fresh perspective on national, local and personal identities, seen 'from below'.
