Turbulent flows are rich with convoluted surfaces and volumes that possess a broad range of length and time scales. Qualitatively, turbulence may be viewed as a swamp, which is occasionally shrouded, wherein lurk a bewildering array of "structures" that erupt momentarily and then disappear. Quantitatively, turbulence is a non-linear phenomena that demands the application of advanced computational and experimental methods to educe these "structures"; that is, turbulence remains the last unsolved problem in classical mechanics.
