Optimizing large systems in array acoustics and active control

A large number of problems in acoustics and vibration of continuous media involve a set of sources (or actuators, emitters) and a set of receivers (or sensors) distributed in the solid or fluid continuum. This is the case of active control of sound and vibration, acoustic imaging and spatial sound field reproduction. All these problems involve, at some point, inverting the matrix H of transfer functions between physical or assumed sources, and receivers. Advances in multi-channel acquisition and processing power have triggered applications involving up to hundreds of sources or receivers. In 2009, I was the principal investigator of a succesfull $4.2M application to the CFI New Initiatives Fund. This infrastructure grant will permit the acquisition, among others, of a state-of-the-art 32 I/O real-time controller platform, a 96-loudspeaker Wave Field Synthesis (WFS) system and a 196-microphone conformal antenna for acoustic imaging. These facilities will bring our infrastructure in array acoustics and active control to world-class level, and trigger exciting new research in these fields.
