Heterocyclic compounds (cyclic compounds that contain a heteroatom such as oxygen or nitrogen) are prevalent in and integral to a number of industries, such as pharmaceuticals, flavors, fragrances, and fine chemicals. Because the vast majority of new medicinal compounds contain heterocycles, the pharmaceutical industry (which generates roughly $550 billion in annual global sales revenue), has been actively seeking new efficient and cost-effective methods for their synthesis. Any increase in synthetic efficiency can lead to both a reduction in the production cost, thus lowering the price of the medicine, and the profound environmental benefit of less chemical waste.
