The proposed research program is centred on the general theme of "Physics of materials under extreme temperature and pressure conditions". The program comprises three main research themes, namely, dense materials for efficient energy and gas storage, novel phases and physics of dense elements and compounds, and development of tools and methods for the study of materials at extreme conditions. With extensive use do synchrotron radiation based techniques like x-ray micro diffraction and laser spectroscopy, it is proposed to study experimentally the complexity in crystalline structures and the change in bonding in high-density molecular systems and elements.
