This NSERC Research Tools and Instruments grant application is to replace a closed-cycle helium cryostat and acquire a low thermal expansion diamond anvil cell, suitable for the study of materials under low temperature and high pressure conditions. The new equipment will allow for electrical transport and spectroscopic measurements at simultaneous low temperature and high pressure, ranging from 5-300 K and 0.1 MPa to 100 GPa, respectively, of samples constrained in a diamond anvil high pressure cell. The range of temperature and pressure conditions will allow the measurements of the physical properties of different classes of materials, e.g., iron-based superconductors, gas hydrates, van der Waals binary solids, and geo-materials.
