In the 2012 AIM (Advanced Intelligent Mechatronics) conference, Japanese researchers presented evidence that the recent Japanese nuclear disaster in particular the post-accident disaster reveals the structural problems in the design of nuclear power plants (note: a nuclear power plant is viewed as a mechatronic system). There is an urgent need to study mechatronic systems for not only conventional performance requirements (i.e., meeting required tasks and creating no or less negative impact to the natural environment and human) but also the resilience property.
