A genomics and systems level view on species divergence

How species become differentiated at the molecular and phenotypic levels is one of the most fundamental questions in evolutionary biology. Here I will take advantage of recent developments in comparative genomics and systems biology to address this question. Using the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae and its closely related species, I will capitalize on genetics and proteomics approaches to dissect, at the molecular level, the genetic bases of the divergence in key phenotypes that differentiate these species, and compare the architecture of their protein-protein interaction networks. My findings will illuminate the process of evolution and contribute to key advancements in the field of biological engineering of microbial organisms. The personnel trained in this project will have the cutting-edge skills and creativity necessary to maintain Canada's leading position in the life sciences, both in academia and in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries.
