The vast majority of medical procedures involving blood transfusions require x-ray sterilization of the blood to avoid patient infection or excessive immune response. Present-day blood sterilization systems rely on a human operator's assessment of the color change of "rad tags" placed on each blood bag, in order to ascertain that sufficient radiation was applied and hence that the blood was properly sterilized. These systems are inefficient and prone to error, resulting in wasted blood and increased costs. Carleton has pioneered a number of Si MOSFET/CMOS dosimeter and wireless IC technologies that could allow the replacement of rad tags by wireless dosimeters having embedded RFID. Recently, an Ottawa-area company, Best Medical, has recognized the potential of CMOS IC technology for enhancing their blood sterilizers in several ways, notably through the elimination of rad tags and the automation of the complete sterilization procedure. The proposed work is to prove the concept of Si CMOS wireless x-ray dosimeter components for blood sterilization to meet the Best's future needs. The goal is to develop dosimeter devices that would be incorporated by Best into enhanced versions of their blood irradiator products, providing significant competitive advantage in a large world-wide market.
