Weather forecasting can cover a range of time scales and different techniques apply for different situations. In general, for forecasts more than 6-12 hours ahead, most reliance is placed on numerical weather prediction models such as the Environment Canada Global Environmental Mulitiscale Model (GEM) but for shorter lead times various "nowcasting" approaches are used, many based on observational data and estimates of translation velocity and development of areas of precipitation, storm cells and other features.
