The extreme performance and cost benefits associated with weight reduction in aircraft places a heavy emphasis on the mechanical design of any parts of an aircraft. However, generally speaking, a reduction in weight comes with a reduction in strength (or safety) of a given component. Given the tremendous concern regarding passenger safety and strict regulations associated with the commercial aircraft industry, the ability to minimize weight without compromising structural integrity is paramount. It is also important to achieve such weight savings and performance improvement with a short design and development time, which will save significant costs.
