Aircraft design is an exceedingly complex process requiring the combined efforts of expert designers from multiple disciplines to arrive at a design that satisfies all imposed requirements. Because of this, aircraft initial design is a costly and time-consuming process. Aircraft designers generally take design and optimization methods with consideration of all relevant aspects of the vehicle lifecycle from design, manufacture, operation, to final disposal at the end of life. There exists a vast quantity of uncertainties arising from the various disciplines in aircraft design analysis, future requirements and technologies as well as the environmental and operational conditions. Therefore it is important to take uncertainties into account from the beginning of aircraft design. The main objective of this research proposal is to evaluate and improve methods for management of various uncertainties associated with the aircraft design problem with applications to multidisciplinary design optimization. This research will lead to provide a practical basis for well-developed integrated system that can reduce design-to-market development cost and time. This will increase the success rate of new aircraft design and will allow more designs to be pursued.
