Computers are increasingly embedded in society and the environment. Traditional servers and desktop computers are connected to devices that range from the ever so powerful smart phones to wireless sensor networks. The ways of connecting are also varied and complex. Computations are increasingly executing in and interacting in and with highly complex and dynamically changing environments. As these advances begin to open up opportunities for solving new types of problems in novel ways, a growing challenge for computations is to adapt to the uncertainty presented by this open environment. Multiple high profile conferences have recently emerged to explore self-adapting and self-organizing systems, and a book has just been published on market-oriented grid and utility computing. A key aspect of this dynamicity is in the resources that the environment affords a computation.
