One definition of "epigenetics" is a stable form of genetic inheritance that is not strictly determined by DNA sequence. Epigenetic regulation can underlie the commitment of a genomic locus to a specific transcriptional state. The disruption of epigenetic regulation of transcription can lead to disease development. In recent years it has become clear that most epigenetic regulation occurs at the level of chromatin structure. One way chromatin structure is regulated occurs at the level of chromatin assembly, the evolutionarily conserved process in eukaryotes where DNA is packaged within histones.
