Fluid coking is an important process for upgrading of oilsands bitumen, wherein liquid feed is heated and cracked by contacting it with hot particles. Spraying of liquid into a bed of particles forms wet agglomerates of solid and liquid, which gradually react and break up in the reactor. The proposed research would investigate the relationship between mass transfer and coke yield in model coke agglomerates using Curie-point heating of scaled physical models. These experiments will define the role of liquid film thickness in coke agglomerates at high liquid saturation, the role of boiling in expanding agglomerates, and the role of feed recycle in its reactivity and coke yield. The experiments would focus on measurement of coke yield and direct observation of liquid and solid behaviour in Curie-point reactors. The project will involve collaboration with Karlsruhe Institute of Technology to help fabricate a range of physical models using Curie-point alloy to support the study.
