Thermally controllable catalytic convertor (referred to as SmartCat), developed by Enigmatech Inc., is capable of reducing internal combustion cold start emissions. By modification of the conventional catalytic converter, the temperature inside SmartCat can be actively controlled through external heating. In a preliminary application test for a 2.2L GM gasoline engine, over 90% in both hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide can be reduced, at the cost of external heating energy.
