Phantoms are inanimate objects commonly used to qualify medical imaging systems. The use of phantoms enables objective quality assurance and performance testing of medical imaging equipment, and reduces the need for animal and/or patient experiments, which are associated with concerns over recruitment, costly care, risk of ionizing radiation, and variable physiology. Recently, increasing effort has gone into the research and development of dynamic image acquisitions (i.e. moving beyond static images) across the spectrum of imaging modality types. Application of dynamic imaging is expected to become standard across the field, even though minor technical issues are still being solved.
