Indoor positioning and navigation is very challenging as current technologies do not allows continuous and seamless 3D navigation. Indoor positioning and mobility are key features for the implementation of location-based services (LBS). LBS require user location data on-the-fly in order to provide its service and other information in a timely fashion. Most commonly used indoor localization techniques involve one or more of the following sensor technologies, infra-red (IR), Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), Ultrasound, Ultra Wideband (UWB), Bluetooth, and IEEE 802.11 (WiFi).In this project we propose to investigate the use of Bluetooth wireless technology for indoor positioning considering that most mobile phones are equipped with Bluetooth. The indoor positioning system will be using low cost stationary beacons and mobile devices. Through this project a Bluetooth indoor positioning system will be implemented and validated using a known building 3D geometry. To obtain accurate position of the mobile users, methodology will be developed for the optimum placement of the beacons network based on density and range. The position accuracy will be determined based on the various Bluetooth localization methods. Fusion of location methods and or location technologies will be also investigated.
