Since 2008 the World's urban population has surpassed the rural population for the first time in history according to the United Nations. In order to resolve effectively urban space-related problems due to this urbanization trend, smart urban infrastructure designs, developments and services will be required. Disasters such as earthquakes, building fires, or chemical spills can cause massive disorder in urban environments and turmoil leading potentially to inefficient evacuation strategies. Existing building evacuation routes approaches usually follow the shortest and most practical path from each building room to the closest exit. The problem with this approach is that it is not adaptive; it does not change relative to the type, intensity, or location of the emergency risk, it does not provide any information to the affected persons, it does not provide any information to the emergency responders and it does not allow reviewing of simulated hazards scenarios and alternative evacuation routes.
