When fitting a building with a Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP), the high upfront cost and long payback periods may make the investment seem unappealing. To further increase the geothermal market penetration and increase the popularity of GSHPs as a sustainable energy alternative, hybrid GSHP systems have been introduced as a solution. These systems are designed for the GSHP to meet a portion of the heating/cooling demand (base loads) and the remaining load is carried by the conventional HVAC system (peak loads). When combining these two system into a climate control network, a control problem arises where a strategy must be developed to determine the operational authority of the various mechanical components in an intelligent manner.
