The links between thinking and acting seem simple and intuitive, but are actually complex and elusive. For example, we usually characterize thought as preceding action - but in reality how we are able to move through the environment fundamentally shapes how we perceive and think about it. Similarly, we usually believe that thoughts (unless spoken) are kept to the thinker - but in reality, how we move reveals much about what we are thinking. Exploring these complex bidirectional links requires the ability to simultaneously measure thinking and moving. The current proposal achieves this goal by augmenting our high resolution motion capture system with the addition of a measure of thought (electroencephalography, EEG) and a measure of the interface between thought and action (eye tracking, eye movements are widely regarded as important in the first stages of both sensory input and motor output). This state-of-the-art laboratory capable of simultaneously collecting data from the eye, body and brain will offer an unparalleled insight into both the inner (neural) and outer (motor) expression of cognition.
