The most prevalent challenges facing the semiconductor industry are the exponential rise in manufacturing costs and increasing time-to-market demands. For example, a modern integrated circuit (IC) requires more than 35 photomasks, which in total can cost in excess of $10 million. From the initial design to manufacturing, a typical IC design undergoes several revisions, known as engineering change-orders (ECOs), in order to fix design or timing errors, as well as unforeseen changes to the requirements. Blackcomb Design Automation is developing pre-emptive circuit-repair technologies to enable hardware engineers to minimize the cost of ECOs by intelligently embedding a set of repair structures into a circuit design prior to fabrication.
