The objective of the collaborative project between Dr. Ordonez (UBC) and Delta-Q technologies is to design the next generation of planar integrated magnetic structures for on-board electric vehicle battery chargers. These chargers are mandated to minimize volume and weight, while maintaining maximum performance and can benefit from research into integrating magnetic components to meet these important demands. Delta-Q Technologies (Burnaby, BC) has been providing high efficiency AC-DC battery chargers and DC-DC power converters to some of the largest manufacturers of industrial electric vehicles in the world since 1999. The need for thin-profile and high-performance magnetic structures for traditional and resonant DC-DC power conversion has sparked a rise in planar magnetic research. Planar magnetic designs have low parasitic inductance, exceptional thermal characteristics, and improved manufacturability over their bulky wire-wound counterparts. The overall magnetic volume is further reduced when multiple magnetic components are built in one planar magnetic core. This reduction in volume increases complexity and requires dedicated research and precise design. This project benefits a variety of initiatives by the Canadian government, including Canada's Electric Vehicle Roadmap, Canada's Science and Technology (S&T) Strategy in an automotive and renewable energy context, and NSERC's objectives of originality and innovation to address a pressing area in modern technology, and Canada's agenda to support industry competitiveness.
