Graphene is a unique nanomaterial derived from graphite; in fact, it can be conveniently viewed as a single atomic layer of graphite and entirely composed bonded carbon atoms. The unique chemical bonding of these atoms leads to promising properties including hydrophobicity, tunable electrical conductivity and mechanical strength. Large area graphene membranes have attracted much attention because of their unique impermeable barrier properties to gases and liquids. Despite the promise of these materials, their application is limited by the preparation of large area defect-free films. Existing chemical vapor deposition methods used to produce these graphene films are highly specialized and costly. More importantly, the film possesses many defects and tend to wrinkle. The presented partnership between Graphene Leaders Canada Inc. (GLC) and the Veinot Laboratory at the University of Alberta aims to build on existing GLC technologies and develop new solution- and spray coating-based methods to fabricate "chemically stitched" large area graphene-based membranes for filtration applications.
