英文摘要
A market study will be conducted at assess the viability of commercializing a new nitric oxide releasing bandage.
It has been established by many studies that low amounts of the gas nitric oxide (NO) generated at the surface of the wound prevents bacterial infections and promotes wound healing.
Our technology is a nitric oxide releasing bandage. The active ingredient in this bandage is a metal ion catalyst incorporated into an inexpensive and plentiful biopolymer obtained from shellfish. The biopolymer serves to stabilize the catalyst locking it into the biopolymer matrix thus preventing its leaching into the wound. Once the metal ion-biopolymer composite comes in contact with wounds, it interacts with compounds naturally found in wound fluids converting them to nitric oxide thus preventing infections and accelerating wound healing.
This technology is targeted to patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes where wound healing is severely retarded or attenuated resulting in increased chances of infection and long recovery times. The other targeted group is patients suffering from pressure ulcers, especially the aging population whereby the aging process has caused structural changes in the epidermis resulting in slow wound healing.
Our technology provides an inexpensive way to incorporate NO-releasing capability to bandages. These bandages will promote wound healing and prevent bacterial infections in target-patient populations decreasing recovery time, minimizing medical complications, lowering healthcare costs and increasing the quality of life of the patients.
Global wound care market is growing, with an estimated CAGR of 9.5% during 2011 to 2016. Total revenues from skin ulcer segment in the wound care market are expected to reach $8.74 billion in 2016.
