The proposed NSERC Engage project consists of the testing of a new innovative tidal energy device which is thought capable of doubling ocean currents (tidal stream or otherwise) for the purpose of increased power production by an underwater turbine. The first part of the testing will be done using a numerical model (ANSYS Fluent) to simulate the device and estimate the power which can be produced by the innovative structure as compared to an underwater turbine on its own. This testing will be verified by testing a scaled model of the structure in a hydraulic flume at the University of Ottawa. The research is important to the partner company Baird (coastal engineering company) as it is a concept that they would like to see developed into a commercially viable product for deployment around the world and as a method of penetrating the global tidal energy market. The research could also bring substantial benefits to Canada by expanding our use of renewable ocean energy resources and by creating jobs within Canada in the rapidly growing tidal energy design and construction sectors. Overall, it is anticipated that the results of the project will demonstrate the advantages of the innovative tidal energy device compared to existing tidal energy technologies.
