Interest in electric vehicles (EVs) including hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles has increased in
recent years. However, any further growth will depend on cost reductions through modifications in the
material, manufacturing and assembly process and also increase of the driving range with fully charged
batteries. Unlike combustion engines, heating of EVs is challenging in cold winter conditions due to the lack of
waste heat from the EV drive train and high electric power consumption of the HVAC system. Novel
approaches should therefore be developed to provide efficient heating and cooling for EVs. A novel and
modified heat pump system, built and patented by Réseau Azra Company can provide higher coefficient of
performance (COP) by pretreatment of the evaporation and condensation air and hence, increasing the overall
COP of the system. The objective of this project is to measure, simulate and evaluate the performance of this
system for the typical heating and cooling requirements of EVs under different driving conditions. Then, by
using the results of this phase as a benchmark, it will be possible to evaluate this system for EV HVAC and
identify the required modifications to adapt this system to an actual EV.
