This proposal will fund a collaborative project between Dr. Chau at UBC and Iris Dynamics, Ltd. based in
Victoria, BC to develop a three-dimensional dynamic magnetic simulation tool for the testing and prototyping
of variable-force electric linear actuators. Iris Dynamics is a Canadian technology company that provides high
performance motion control systems for the realistic simulation and precision remote operation of aerial,
marine, and land vehicles. They have developed a new type of electric linear actuator that relies on an array of
coils and a magnetic shaft passing through the center of the array. The technology has the potential to
substantially reduce the construction costs and increase the reliability of many motion control systems and
other applications requiring precision linear actuators. The company is interested in extending its market
penetration into commercial flight training devices and eventually into the wider simulation training space by
way of custom actuator manufacturing. In order to provide efficient actuator manufacturing services, Iris
Dynamics requires simulation tools to solve for and visualize the magnetic interactions within induction
actuators of arbitrary size, shape, and current levels.
Dr. Chau and Iris Dynamics will collaborate to build a three-dimensional dynamic magnetic simulation system
which will ultimately be used to test future product designs for force output, power consumption, force
linearization, thermal management, and magnetic field interactions (building/collapsing fields, eddy currents
etc.). The simulation system will be used to quickly identify/eliminate issues in various designs ultimately with
an eye towards prototype cost reduction. This tool will be used to quickly establish the best likely design paths
for achieving performance targets and for estimating how a given design restriction change will affect other
performance variables. This project will provide direct economic benefit to Iris Dynamics, which will translate
into new full-time positions that employ skilled Canadian workers.
