Numerous disinfectants with different chemical structures can be used for the disinfection of surfaces.
However, the adhesion of bacterial biofilms will modify surface properties and can greater reduce the
efficiency of the disinfectants. The goal of this project is to work together with Avmor in order to develop
chemicals with novel surface properties that can both prevent biofilm adhesion and improve disinfection
efficiency. We will relate the physicochemical structure and properties of different functionalized surfaces to
the production and growth of bacteria and bacterial biofilms. Our short-term objective will be to determine
properties of several formulations of surface bound alkylated silanols, including their surface charge, size and
morphology, as well as their ability to prevent the adhesion of bacterial biofilms.
