The game industry is one of the largest entertainment industries, generating billions of dollars in revenues annually, and creating jobs to communities across the globe. Similar to the other entertainment industries such as movie and music industries, the game industry can survive only if it attracts audiences. One of the key factors in success of computer games is immersiveness of user experiences. Avid gamers enjoy working with computer games that provide realistic environments in which the critical features of the game match up with the critical features of the players' schemata. Full body wearable sensor suits provide the opportunity of experiencing realistic environment for the gamers. Wearable sensors enable immersiveness with tangible and physical interaction not ever experienced by any one before. However, the main challenge in the wearable sensor suit is its cost. The purchase of a complete commercial body sensor suit can cost upwards of US$12,000 exclusive of the customizations that might be necessary to address specific needs. Because of the cost, the full body wearable sensor suit is limited currently to research institutes, military organizations, movie studios, and wealthy individuals. The main purpose of this project is to build an affordable full body sensor suit in collaboration with Zippy Consulting. We plan to develop low-cost hardware and software platforms required for a fully functioning wearable sensor prototype without scarifying performance. Zippy Consulting is a successful consulting firm and provides services to the fortune 500 companies. This project is a starting point for collaboration between the Lakehead University and Zippy consulting. In long term, we plan to use wearable sensor for other applications such as reducing sport related injuries. Customization of wearable sensors for other applications is a multi-disciplinary project and requires a wide range of expertise. While in short term, this project enables Zippy consulting to offer affordable gaming experience for the public, in long term, it helps Zippy consulting to benefit from the wide range of expertise available at the Lakehead University and increase its revenue.
