Candura Instruments, a private Canadian company located in Oakville Ontario, designs and manufactures portable electrical power measurement instruments for the power industry. The University of Toronto and Candura have been collaboartaing under the auspices of an Engage grant and an Engage Plus grant since January of 2015. The Engage Grant focused on the initial development of a Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) and the Engage Plus grant focused on experimentally validating a communications protocol. The focus for the CRD is: (1) to fully develop a new measurement unit, denoted as the Digital System Recorder - Phasor Measurement Unit (DSR-PMU) and (2) to develop a high frequency transient recording unit, denoted as the Fast Transient Recorder (FTR) unit. The DSR-PMU and the FTR will be state-of-the-art systems which will provide Candura with the critical systems for integration into a product that has no counterpart in the current power system measurement market. Being the first to develop and market such a system will allow CANDURA Instruments to gain a significant foothold in the Canadian, and more importantly, in the international power systems market (US and Europe). Specifically, the market size for the products being developed by CANDURA instruments can be estimated by considering the number of electrical substations in North America (approximately 16,000 substations in the US). A fully instrumented power system would have a PMU in each substation resulting in a potential market of 15,000 to 20,000 PMUs. Presently there are 1,100s PMU installed in North America. Realizing 10% of the potential market will result in sales of 1,400 to 1,900 units. The cost of a PMU ranges from $7,000 to over $50,000, depending on the device features and measurement precision/accuracy.
