Design of small hydropower generation stations requires the analysis of hydraulic transients at the spillway tunnel and the associated structural vibrations. Currently, there are no integrated simulation models that can be used by designers to analyze hydraulic transients and the associated structural vibrations simultaneously. The proposed research project will examine the modelling approaches of hydraulic transients at spillway tunnels and the associated structural vibrations, formulate an integrated modelling approach to model transients and structural vibrations, develop new numerical testing models, conduct numerical experiments to generate simulated data of hydraulic transients and structural vibrations, evaluate the simulated data in terms of appropriateness and limitations, and recommend how to model hydraulic transients at spillway tunnels and the associated structural vibrations. This project will provide new knowledge to the partner organization (resulting
in increasing consulting jobs, revenue, and employee), contribute to a better design small hydropower generation stations, and train Highly Qualified Personnel (HQP) at the Masters and Post-doctoral fellow levels.
