英文摘要
Many bonding adhesives for similar metals are available on the market. Very little research has been conducted on the adhesive bonding of two different materials such as an aluminum sheet to a steel sheet. The goal is to have a superior bond between the two metal sheets. If water/moisture ingress is prevented between the sheet metal and adhesive, the bonded joint will remain intact. It is possible that one adhesive may work well for one type of material but may not be as effective in bonding for another material. The study will determine if one adhesive can work well for both materials and if the aluminum and steel sheets require a unique preparation process for a specific adhesive. The research supported by this NSERC Engage Grant will investigate the use of a variety of commercially available adhesives, examine various pre-treatments of the sheet metal surface preparation such as light, medium, heavy sanding as well as metal surface temperature (ambient and pre-heated) and pressure for application of the adhesive. In addition the adhesives will be evaluated for their appropriate curing temperature for optimum bond strength. Five ASTM standards will be followed to test the adhesives at various temperatures, humidity and configurations. The performance of the selected adhesives will enable recommendations to be made related to their adhesion ability, metal surface preparation technique and potential use for bonding dissimilar metals. It is anticipated the research will provide a lower cost and a quicker, more reliable assembling technique than the previous approach.
