Where seismic uses small explosions to detect the presence of oil, VibeDx applies gentle vibrations to the skin to detect spinal pathologies and injuries. This technology is based on the discovery that when the spine is exposed to these vibrations, it gives off a unique vibration response used to identify the type, location and severity of a patient's back problem. A recent clinical trial demonstrated that although VibeDx could collect spine displacements in response to vibration, the resolution of these measures was not sufficient in all cases. Specifically, when vibration is applied to the spine, the accuracy of the resulting measure of spinal displacement is dependent on the displacement magnitude; only large displacements can be detected currently. This collaboration between Dr. Zemp, his team and VibeDx will solve this problem by developing a new method to analyze VibeDx data. This method will assess radiofrequency data obtained by ultrasound to improve VibeDx signal accuracy by 3-5x. The result will be a more robust diagnostic tool that has improved commercial possibilities for improving the lives of Canadians with low back pain.
