The Canadian Fishing Company (Canfisco) operates the largest fleet of commercial purse seine vessels in British Columbia (BC), the future success of which depends on sustainability of the resources they target. These are mixed-species fisheries that require species of conservation concern to be released. If high mortality results among released fish, Canfisco's access to the abundant and profitable target species will be limited. If handled appropriately it is thought that salmon released from purse seine fisheries suffer minimal mortality, but this assumption has not been tested.
