Thin stillage (TS) is a liquid by-product of the ethanol industry with great commercial potential to provide valuable industrial products and probiotic animal feeds. Five litres of thin stillage are produced per litre of ethanol produced in an ethanol plant. Recently, Reaney et al. developed and patented two technologies for producing a 60% protein concentrate (US Patent 8,404,884), industrial chemicals and a valuable nutraceutical (US pat. 8,835,665) from TS. These methods could be applied to any industrial fermentation.
