Wood poles are widely used in Canada to support electric transmission and distribution lines. Since wood is a raw material, the material properties are affected by environmental conditions. Factors such as temperature, moisture, bacteria or fungi may induce the development of internal decay in the poles. Decayed areas could reduce the strength of a pole significantly, making it vulnerable to extreme weather conditions. In order to avoid sudden failures of wood poles, ensure the reliability of the electrical network and develop effective maintenance programs, Waterloo North Hydro needs to assess the internal condition of wood poles reliably.
